How to install and remove Camlock couplings?
How to install Camlock couplings?
You will install Camlock couplings in several different ways depending on whether you are dealing with a pipe outlet or a flexible hose. In the latter case, the method of installation also depends on the type of clamp (regular or safety one).
You will fit a Camlock coupling with a threaded end to the pipe. You simply screw one into the other.
The exception is a pipe without thread. In this case, you will need a coupling with a weld-on end.
On the other hand, you fit a Camlock with a hose stub to a flexible pipe. Here, you additionally need a clamp/band to prevent the coupling from falling out due to the pressure of the medium. You can choose between regular and safety clamps.
However, with the latter, the Camlock coupling should have a special smooth hose stub that has a safety flange. It is necessary for the safety clamp to hold the whole in place.

What tools are needed to install the Camlock coupling?
You do not need any special tools to install a Camlock coupling. You only need a screwdriver to tighten the clamp on the hose and thus protect the installation from pressure.
Whereas, you do not need tools at all when installing a Camlock coupling on a pipe. You simply use the threaded end. The only exception is if welding is required.
Below, you will find an in-depth step-by-step guide explaining how the Camlock coupling is installed.
Camlock coupling installation – Step-by-step guide
To fit the Camlock coupling to the hose, follow the steps below:
- Decide which clamp you will use. This not only depends on the type of stub (as you already know), but also on the order in which you follow the procedure. With most clamps, you first slide them onto the hose and only then install the coupling.
- If you have opted for a traditional clamp, slide it onto the hose.
- Push the stub of the coupling into the hose outlet. Make sure it enters all the way in so that the end of the hose rests against the Camlock body.
- Move the clamp closer to the hose outlet and tighten it. This is how you have fitted one part of the coupling.
- Repeat the above steps again for the other Camlock piece on the next hose.
- When both parts of the coupling are ready to be connected, move the socket handles so that they are facing upwards. This will make the inner surface smooth and ready for the plug to be fitted.
- Slide the male part into the socket and move the handles downwards. This will seal the Camlock coupling.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that some couplings have additional clips. With these, you will lock the handles, which will prevent accidental disconnection of the installation.
However, these are not the only accessories for Camlock couplings. You can read about the other ones in a separate article on our website.
How to remove Camlock couplings?
To remove the Camlock coupling, first unscrew the clamp that holds it to the hose. Once you have done this, simply pull the coupling stub out of the hose.
Conversely, if the Camlock has been installed on the pipe, simply unscrew the thread.
What tools are needed to remove the Camlock coupling?
You will need a tool with which to unscrew the clamp to remove the Camlock coupling. Usually a suitable screwdriver will suffice.
If, on the other hand, you want to remove the Camlock coupling from the pipe, you will do so without any additional tools, as in most cases it will be threaded on.
Camlock coupling removal – Step-by-step guide
Below, we explain in more detail how to remove the Camlock coupling from the hose:
- Disconnect the plug and socket if you have not already done so. For this, slide the handles of the female part upwards and pull out the male part.
- Take a screwdriver and unscrew the clamp screw to loosen it.
- Remove one part of the coupling.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the next hose to remove the other part of the Camlock.
How to fit a Camlock coupling to a pipe?
To fit a Camlock coupling to a pipe, choose a version of the plug or socket with a threaded end and screw it on. On the other hand, if the pipe is not threaded, you can always weld the coupling on. However, you should also choose a fitting that is suitable for this application.
What is the flow direction of Camlock couplings?
The traditional flow direction for Camlock couplings is from plug to socket. However, it is not a core principle, so someone can assemble the male and female parts in reverse.
Are Camlock couplings reusable?
Yes, Camlock couplings are reusable. Nothing prevents you from dismantling them in one place and fitting them elsewhere.
Can Camlock couplings withstand high pressure?
Some Camlock couplings can withstand high pressure. As standard, they can withstand a few to several bar (depending on size and material). However, there are also dedicated Camlock couplings for high pressure that can even withstand pressures of several tens of bar.
Summary
Installing Camlock couplings is relatively simple and does not require specialised tools. That's one of the reasons they are so popular.
However, be aware that the method of installation differs depending on whether you are fitting on a pipe or on a hose. Furthermore, in the latter case, you must also pay attention to the type of clamp.
Nevertheless, the Camlock system is one of the most user-friendly and easy to install.
