Slurry hose is a hose that is used for pumping or suctioning various liquid and semi-liquid substances such as sludge, slurry or faecal matter. It is usually made from PVC or rubber (e.g. EPDM/SBR), but PVC is a much more popular and versatile material. This is due to a number of factors that directly translate into comfort and quality.

How to choose a slurry hose?

To choose a slurry hose, check its most important parameters, such as the material it is made of, flexibility, and bending radius. As hoses are made from many different materials, they differ in their properties.

Some slurry hoses are made of hard PVC with a spiral. Thanks to their low weight, they make your work much easier. Their resistance to solar UV radiation and hydrolysis extends the life of the hose.

However, material is not the only thing you should take into account.

Parameters such as flexibility, wall thickness and bending radius also count. The hose for the septic tank pump must be thick enough, otherwise the risk of cracking increases - especially at low temperatures and bending into a curve.

It is worth noting here that a thicker pump hose that has been made from a good mix of materials often has more flexibility than the thinner variant.

The last significant parameter is vacuum resistance. As the hose sucks the medium during operation, it must not kink inwards, as it will block the flow.

Therefore, the septic tank hose must be able to withstand the vacuum that the pump generates.

Will a rubber slurry hose work for septic tanks?

Yes, rubber slurry hose will work for septic tanks. Rubber slurry hoses are slightly heavier and more susceptible to UV radiation, but this does not mean they are not suitable for septic tank work. They are often more mechanically robust, so they find use elsewhere.

Rubber hoses are great for transporting dirty water and sludge, which is why some people use them as an alternative to traditional piping.

There is nothing surprising about this. Rubber septic tank hose is lighter and more mobile than rigid pipes. This makes it more suitable where there is a need to move the pump.

In addition, the rubber joint absorbs vibrations and this has a direct impact on the longevity of the equipment. Their wear progresses more slowly.

It is worth noting here that this type of hose is usually characterised by a larger diameter. Some of the most popular models are:

What else is a slurry hose used for?

Slurry hose is used in many industries. One of these is agriculture, where hoses of this type are used to dispense silage, animal waste or slurry.

Some farmers also use them to feed food to animals (e.g. seeds or pellets).
