Guillemin couplings - Guillemin fittings
How are Guillemin couplings built?
Guillemin couplings are built on a unique symmetrical design that provides them with high functionality and reliability. It makes connecting two identical connector ends quick and easy. Special locking rings protect against accidental separation during use.
There are 3 separate parts that make up the Guillemin coupling half:
- body with catches, ending in a hose connection or male/female thread (as required),
- gasket,
- locking ring.
As standard, the body and locking ring of the coupling are made of aluminium or acid-resistant stainless steel, but there are also product versions made of brass or polypropylene. As for the gaskets, the most common material is NBR rubber or FKM (Viton) for more demanding applications.
What are the key parameters of the Guillemin coupling?
When choosing a Guillemin coupling, the key parameter is the nominal diameter DN, on which the spacing of the lugs also depends. There is a choice of sizes from DN20 to DN150 (from ¾ inch to 6 inches).
Another important point is the permissible operating pressure. In the case of Guillemin couplings, this is 16 bar, which is good.
Finally, it is also worth noting the operating temperature range. This depends primarily on the material from which the gasket is made (i.e. the most susceptible part of the joint). For example:
- The operating temperature range of the SBR rubber gasket is -10 to 80 degrees Celsius;
- whereas the range for an FKM rubber gasket is from -10 to 180 degrees Celsius.
How to connect a Guillemin coupling?
To connect the Guillemin coupling together, follow these steps:
- Put the two halves of the coupling together so that they meet with the gaskets;
- Twist the two locking rings so that they engage with the catches.
It is best to use a hook spanner to tighten the rings, although this can sometimes be done without additional tools.
However, take into account that you also need to attach the coupling to the installation. In the case of a male/female threaded spigot, the case is simple, but attaching the spigot to the hose will require additional hose clamps or clips.
Why use Guillemin couplings?
Guillemin couplings are worth using for many reasons:
- Easy connection and disconnection — Guillemin couplings can be easily connected and disconnected with a quarter turn, making them ideal for applications where frequent replacement, maintenance or detachment of parts is required.
- Airtightness — Guillemin couplings provide a secure and airtight connection, which is indispensable when transferring hazardous or valuable materials.
- Durability — Guillemin couplings are made of durable materials such as stainless steel or aluminium, which ensure their longevity and resistance to corrosion.
- Versatility — Guillemin couplings are available in a variety of sizes and types, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including hose, tank car, rail car, and chemical processing connections.
- Cost-effective — Guillemin couplings are economical and require minimal maintenance, making them a cost-effective choice for fluid and bulk material transfer applications.
FAQ
What is a Guillemin coupling?
Guillemin coupling is a symmetrical coupling designed in accordance with EN 14420-8 and NF E 29-572, which is used for pressure and suction conveying of liquids, powders and granules. It consists of two identical halves with lugs, which are directed by their seals towards each other for connection. The coupling achieves its tightness with locking rings screwed under the catches.
How to choose the size of a Guillemin coupling?
To choose a size of a Guillemin coupling, first measure the nominal diameter of the hose or pipe in your installation. Based on this, you will match the appropriate coupling. You can choose from a range of different Guillemin coupling sizes — from DN20 to DN150.
What are the applications of Guillemin couplings?
Applications for Guillemin couplings are as follows: pressure and suction pumping of water or other liquids, hydrocarbons (including bituminous substances), chemicals (stainless steel version only) and bulk materials (powders, granules). They are therefore used in industrial, irrigation and transhipment installations, as well as in the equipment of road and rail tankers. However, the couplings are not suitable for steam and liquid gases.
