SMS fittings - SMS couplings
How is SMS fitting constructed?
SMS fitting consists of 4 basic parts:
- the circular nut (which joins the male and female parts together);
- seal (usually made of FDA approved NBR rubber, but sometimes also made of materials such as EPDM, PTFE, FTM or silicone);
- female part;
- male adapter (with space for the seal).
Apart from the sealing, all parts of the coupling are almost always created from stainless steel, which is suitable for food contact.
Having written this, it is worth pointing out that SMS couplings come in several versions. Although the principle of operation remains the same, they clearly differ in construction.
What are the different types of SMS fittings?
There are 2 types of SMS fittings on offer from manufacturers:
- for welding,
- for under a safety clamp.
The weld-on version has a shortened male and female part and (as the name suggests) is used for welding to the installation. On the other hand, you will usually recognise an SMS coupling for under a safety clamp by the fact that the male and female parts end in an elongated, smooth or notched tail.
What are the dimensions and other parameters of SMS coupling?
When it comes to SMS couplings, the dimensions allowed by the standard start from DN25 and reach DN100. This makes the choice so wide that you are sure to find the right diameter for your needs.
One of the most popular sizes is the 63.5 mm SMS coupling (also known as the 60.3 SMS coupling due to the fact that it fits a pipe of this diameter).
It is also worth mentioning the allowable working pressure, which for the connector itself is 15 bar.
The maximum operating temperature, on the other hand, depends on the seal used. PTFE (Teflon) products are the most robust in this respect.
How to connect SMS fittings together?
Connecting the SMS fittings is very simple. Just follow the steps below:
- 1. Put the nut on the female part of the coupling.
- Place the seal in its designated place (you will find it in the male part of the coupling).
- Join the male and female parts together and tighten the nut firmly (there is a special SMS coupling spanner for this).
Remember, however, that in the case of weld-on couplings and those under a clamping ring/contracting collet, you still have to connect them to the installation as intended!
How much does SMS coupling cost?
SMS coupling costs from £20 to £90. The cost of the SMS coupling depends primarily on its size, type, and the seal used in it. Therefore, it is difficult to indicate a specific price for the product.
Depending on the customer's needs, it will vary.
FAQ
What is an SMS coupling?
The SMS coupling is a coupling manufactured to a Swedish standard (Swedish Manufacturing Standard). It consists of four components: a nut, a seal, a male part and a female part. In addition, it is available in several versions — depending on how it will connect to the rest of the installation.
What is the SMS coupling used for?
The SMS coupling is used for connecting installations in the food industry (mainly dairy). However, it is also suitable for the cosmetic and chemical industries. It is easy to use, robust and does not contaminate the medium to be transmitted.
Which SMS keg connection should I choose?
A weld-on SMS coupling will suit the keg best. Unless the tank design has installation features that allow other versions of the coupling to be used.
