How is a screw hose clamp constructed?
A screw hose clamp is constructed from two main components:
- toggle-type locking device (this includes pins and a bolt);
- strap (it has turned-up edges, so you can be sure that it will not damage the surface of the hose).
What are the parameters of the screw hose clamp?
The main parameters of this kind of clamp are the minimum and maximum diameter and the width of the strap. The diameter determines whether the product fits on a particular hose. The width of the strap, on the other hand, directly translates into the strength of the clamp, which goes hand in hand with the ability to fit even very large hoses.
What types of screw hose clamp are there?
The screw hose clamp is available in the following types:
- standard screw hose clamp — is characterised by its typical design and comes in diameters ranging from a dozen to several hundred mm;
- double screw hose clamp — as the name suggests, it has two screw locks, which are located on opposite sides of the clamp;
- screw hose clamp with movable bridge — is distinguished by its detachable lock bridge, so that you can dismantle it without having to remove the hose;
- mini screw hose clamp — very similar to the standard clamp, but is designed for hoses with small diameters and not very thick walls.
What materials is the screw hose clamp made of?
The most common material for the screw hose clamp is galvanised steel and stainless steel. However, you can still choose from 4 main clamp variants:
- W1 (all in galvanised steel) —the cheapest version of the product with good strength and corrosion resistance;
- W2 (stainless steel strap and lock, galvanised steel bolt and rollers) — a version of the clamp with increased corrosion resistance;
- W4 (all stainless steel) — slightly more expensive, but very corrosion resistant and suitable for most applications;
- W5 (all in AISI 316 stainless steel) — the most expensive screw hose clamp, which is distinguished by its extremely high corrosion resistance, even when in contact with highly corrosive substances such as chlorides.
For most installations, the W2 or W4 varieties will suffice. As far as W1 clips are concerned, they will work best where corrosion is not a major concern. On the contrary, the W5 variety is suitable for use in almost any environment (even highly corrosive), thanks to its special stainless steel alloy.
What advantages does the screw hose clamp have?
The screw hose clamp has several important advantages that make it very popular in industry:
- strong clamp — the screw lock allows the clamp to be tightened with great force, thus ensuring a tight and robust clamping even for heavy hoses with thick walls;
- safety — thanks to the appropriate design, the strap does not cut into and damage the top layer of the hose;
- stainless steel material — each clamp is made from steel that is more or less corrosion resistant, which increases its overall service life;
- wide range of sizes — the clamps are available in so many different sizes that you can easily find the right one for your needs;
- many applications — in addition to clamping hoses, the screw hose clamps are also suitable for installing pipes, bundling cables, mounting road signs on poles and creating other stainless steel connections.
How to install a screw hose clamp?
To install the screw hose clamps, please follow the steps below:
- Clean and dry the surface of the hose;
- Apply the clamp to the hose;
- Insert the installation end (or coupling) into the hose;
- Tighten the bolt using a hexagonal key or flat-bladed screwdriver (avoid pneumatic tools, as exceeding the tightening torque will result in the bending of the bolt housing).
FAQ
How to choose the right screw hose clamps?
When you are choosing your screw hose clamps, pay attention above all to the outer diameter of the hose and the environmental conditions in which they will operate. Based on this, you will choose the size and type of clamp material.
Are screw hose clamps reusable?
Yes, screw hose clamps are reusable. However, before you reapply them, check them for any obvious signs of wear, rust or corrosion. If you notice that they are out of condition, fit new clamps for safety.
Can I use several screw hose clamps on one hose?
Yes, you can use several screw hose clamps on one hose. However, there should not be too many, as this will increase the risk of damage to the hose. A popular practice is to mount hose ends with two screw hose clamps.
