Camlock fittings

CAMLOCK fittings are fittings that are used to easily connect hoses and machines in many industries. CAMLOCK fittings are most commonly used by the petroleum, fuel and chemical industries. Their specification first appeared in the US military standard Today, however, it is also specified by the European standard EN 14420-7 (former DIN 2828).

Thanks to its simple construction, CAMLOCK fittings are very easy to use. It consists of two components that simply slide one into the other. The locking occurs when you pull the cam arms downwards. A flat elastomer seal in the groove of the CAMLOCK fitting ensures a leak-free installation. In addition, a lynch pin in the coupler holes provides additional protection against accidental opening and disconnection.

Camlock fittings - Camlock couplings

How are CAMLOCK fittings constructed?

CAMLOCK fittings consists of two parts — a male and a female. The latter additionally has a seal and arms (cams) that are used to tighten the connection, so that the whole forms a tight construction.

In addition, special safety clips are also provided. Their role is simple, as they protect against uncontrolled disconnection of the CAMLOCK fittings.  You simply slide them into the hole of the female part of the connector.

Which are the types of CAMLOCK fittings?

When it comes to CAMLOCK fittings types, they are divided primarily according to the material from which they are made. You will find four basic types of CAMLOCK fittings made from :

  • stainless steel,
  • aluminium,
  • brass,
  • polypropylene.

Each of these materials has its strengths and weaknesses, so choosing the right coupling depends primarily on your needs and the medium you will be transferring.

Differences also appear in the threads that specific connectors have. You can choose from:

  • BSP internal and external threads,
  • hosetails
  • flange fittings,
  • plugs and adapters.

How to connect CAMLOCK fittings together?

To connect CAMLOCK fittings plug the male adapter into the female connector (with arms).

Once there, pull the arms at the same time and close them. In this way, the two parts will fuse together tightly.

They will remain in this position until you pull both handles upwards. This will release the joint.  The aforementioned safety clips, on the other hand, will hold the arms in place, but their use is not necessary for most works.

There is already a seal in the female connector, which forms a tight seal when connected to the male adapter. You would need a really strong force to make the connector separate on its own if the CAMLOCK coupling is properly connected.

CAMLOCK fittings consist of a male adapter and a female connector, which together form a permanent joint between two sections of pipe or hose.

What dimensions do CAMLOCK fittings come in?

CAMLOCK fittings are available in dimensions from 1/2 to 8 inches (DN13 do DN200) for all aluminium, brass, and stainless steel products. The situation is slightly different for polypropylene couplings, the largest versions of which usually do not exceed 4 inches.

There is one other point worth making here. Well, polypropylene couplings are not covered by any standard in terms of dimension. Therefore, depending on the manufacturer, their diameter may vary slightly.

This will be a problem if you want to combine a male adapter and a female coupling from two different sets.

The same applies to couplings from other materials with 1/2, 5 and 8 inch dimensions. This is because the Mil A-A-59326A specification does not include them.  Hence, here too, a problem may arise when trying to combine two different sets.

How do you select the right hose coupling? Simply measure the inner diameter of the hose. If it is 3 inches, this means that a CAMLOCK 3 inch coupling will be suitable.

How much do CAMLOCK fittings cost?

CAMLOCK fittings cost from £1 to over £200. The price of CAMLOCK fittings depends primarily on two factors - their size and the material from which they are made. Therefore, it is impossible to give a specific sum when it comes to products of this type.

We guarantee, however, that in our shop you will only find CAMLOCK fittings from renowned manufacturers which offer the best value for money.

FAQ

For which applications are CAMLOCK fittings used?

arrow-up

CAMLOCK fittings are used to connect hoses, pipes and tanks that are used to transport liquids and powders. These include various types of pellets, grit, water, fuels, chemicals, food and pharmaceutical products and many other media. However, you will most often encounter this type of connector in the petrochemical industry.

What are CAMLOCK fittings seals?

arrow-up

The most common CAMLOCK fittings seals are made from NBR rubber. The only exception to this is in polypropylene couplings, where an EPDM rubber seal comes as standard. However, these are not the only sealing materials. Depending on the medium, the following are also used: FKM, CSM, FEP, as well as compounds with a PTFE core.

Are CAMLOCK fittings suitable for compressed air?

arrow-up

No, CAMLOCK fittings are not suitable for compressed air. Their use is generally discouraged when transporting any gases.

What to choose: 3/4 inch CAMLOCK fittings or 2 inch CAMLOCK fittings?

arrow-up

Always choose the diameter of the CAMLOCK fittings according to the size of the hoses or pipes in the installation. This will ensure that the construction remains leak-proof and safe for all who work on it.

What are CAMLOCK fittings?

arrow-up

CAMLOCK fittings are a type of industrial fittings used to connect hoses. They consist of a socket and a plug that are connected together to create a tight connection. They often also have a gasket, usually made of EPDM rubber.

What materials are CAMLOCK fittings made of?

arrow-up

CAMLOCK fittings are most often made of stainless steel, brass, aluminum, polypropylene or nylon.

What sizes are CAMLOCK fittings available in?

What are the advantages of using CAMLOCK fittings?

arrow-up

The advantages of using CAMLOCK fittings are: quick and easy assembly and disassembly, durability of the fittings, low cost, compatibility with other elements of the installation, safety, resistance to leaks, easier maintenance.

According to what standards are CAMLOCK fittings manufactured?

arrow-up

CAMLOCK fittings are manufactured according to the A-A-59326D standard in the United States (formerly Mil-C-27487) and to the EN 14420-7 standard in Europe.
